(3601) Tide lock, or Tidal lock
A lock connecting a navigable canal to a tidal river, estuary or tidal basin, provided with single or double opposed gates on one or both sides, so that the craft can pass either way at all times. Depending upon the relative water levels, tidal locks may have single opposed or safety gates or, as is more usual, two sets of double opposed gates operating in opposite directions, or sector gates enabling lock operations in both directions. Lock with single or double opposed gates are (illustrated).
